I think the mechanic was very creative in his answer. I think that it is BS. The speedometer is well documented problem and you should be able to tell if the noise is coming from the speedometer.
However, anything (visible or inside the engine will vibrate at a certain speed if it is loose of misaligned. Does it vibrate only in motion or does it vibrate at a particular RPM while standing still.
You need to find out where the sound is coming from. This does not sound normal.
